However, the common stereotype in the current teaching field is that only women could only be teachers, at least this is what is heavily implied to children and along with having mostly female teachers throughout elementary/middle/high school this stereotype is only reinforced. However, there is much more to gender according to every individual and by making assumptions about a person due to how they dress could lead to negative interactions. Introducing the concept of gender-diverse children or individuals should be something that becomes normalized since many individuals do not feel comfortable with the gender they are labeled as since birth.
While I feel comfortable in my gender there are many that do not and it is our job to provide safe spaces to those who need them, everyone is welcomed whether it is in the classroom to learn or even to teach future generations of students. We need to continue advocating for diverse interactions in all classrooms because every one has the right to an education regardless of gender, sex , race and religion.
What a lovely post, Andrea. I agree with you that teachers should advocate for diverse interactions as well as provide safe spaces for children that may need them. As the world introduces new identities and sexualities, we should be open to receiving them.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post, Andrea! I agree that as teachers, we should provide safe spaces for students and make them feel comfortable. Teachers truly do shape students into who they will be later in life, and showing them acceptance and advocating for them, will make them likely to do the same for others in the future.
ReplyDeleteYour post is amazing! I love how you talked about how any person that identifies in any way should feel comfortable in the classroom as well as teaching in a classroom. I really think this should be the whole push behind the education program. It doesn't matter how you identify as long as you are here to do the work and have the best intentions for your students. I really hope that as our society becomes more accepting of all different identities so that we might be able to step away from the idea that teachers are mainly females and see a more diverse teaching community.
